RECOMMENDED BOOKS Age & Gender Related Issues

The Invisible Sex:
Uncovering the True Roles of Women in Prehistory

A science based historical perspective on the role of early women; it is a window into modern day gender identity and discrimination. Not only does it trace our evolutionary roots, the authors also paint a fresh insight into how and why women do the things we do, encourage men to scratch their heads in disbelief, and unconsciously encourage children to favor women over men. Filled with in-depth anthropological research and sociological meaning I really enjoyed this book especially for the human timeline noting important anatomical and physiological changes of the human body along the way

Designing for Older Adults:
Principles and Creative Human Factors Approaches

Standard text book format, but filled with useful data and great insight into how and why design plays such an important role in creating a comfortable place to shop, relax, heal, work, and call home!

The Measure of Man & Woman:
Human Factors in Design

A fantastic resource for body measurements, anthropometric diagrams and human factors data. Also features a free CD-ROM which contains CAD ready figures and detailed information. However the best feature of this easy to read book are the room by room details presented from the body's perspective which enable the designer to correctly specify architectural and design detail to any space based on what works BEST for the body and brain

Design Innovations for Aging with Alzheimer's

Creating Caring Environments

A great resource for anyone specializing in healthcare or assisted living design but more importantly, Betsy's book gives CAREGIVERS a place to gain real insight into environment modifications that will improve the quality of life for victims of this insidious disease. Even though this book is intended for the professional design community, anyone will benefit from the evidence based research Brawley offers

Strong Women Stay Young

Everything from tips on how to modify your home for unwelcomed age related bodily changes and how to set up home gyms in small places to medical tidbits on how and why women's bodies differ from men. The past US Surgeon General sums it up best when he said" this book is an essential tool for women of all ages"

Living Well With Macular Degeneration:
Practical Tips and Essential Information

This is a great book for anyone who is suffering from this disease or knows someone who is. It is full of great everyday activities and also has wonderful information on diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes that can help with the progression of the disease

Are Your Hormones Making You Sick?:
A woman's Guide to Better Health Through Hormonal Balance

I highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to learn more about hormone imbalances. It covers many areas including hot flashes, risk factors for breast cancer and osteoporosis.

Chasing Life:
New Discoveries in the Search for Immortality to Help You Age Less Today

Wonderful advice for living a long and happy life.

Remarkable Women of the Twentieth Century:

Ergonomics for Children:
Designing products and places for toddler to teens

This book is a must have for anyone who is or will be designing for children and teens. It is full of useful information that can assist in understanding the complete range of factors that should be considered when designing for children. I would also recommennd this book to both teachers and parents

Women's Health and Wellness:
an illustrated guide

For any woman out there who would love to understand some of women's most common health concerns. It offers a wonderful visual understanding of sometimes very complex medical issues.
